JLS released their debut single last Sunday and their
huge fan base rushed straight to iTunes and put 'Beat Again' at the top of our
chart last Sunday.
There's been no sign of the JLS fans letting up on their downloads this
week, 'Beat Again' has held it's ground at the top of the chart ...and it
wasn't an easy week.
JLS had big competition this week from Black Eyed Peas, their second single
from their new album, 'The E.N.D' has been climbing the charts all week but 'I
Gotta Feeling' only managed to get to No. 2 this week.
There was also a high new entry for Birmingham-born Mr. Hudson, he's been
signed to Kanye West's label and his new single 'Supernova' was this week's
highest new entry at No. 3.
Further down the chart we also saw new entries for Melanie Fiona, her
single, 'Give It To Me Right' charted at No. 38 and Pink gets her second
appearance in our chart, the title track from her current album, 'Funhouse'
was new in the Big Top 40 at No. 36 this week, while her previous single,
'Please Don't Leave Me' is still doing well at No. 28.
Last Sunday you changed the chart, JLS only released
their debut single on Sunday morning and when we went on air at 4pm, 'Beat
Again' was nowhere to be seen in our chart.
By 6pm when we locked down the chart, you had downloaded so many copied of
the song that it flew straight to the top of our chart, giving the boys their
first No. 1.
You can hear more from JLS on this week's show as Rich + Kat tear them away
from screaming girls to have a quick chat... But can they stay at the top for
a second week?
The Black Eyed Peas new song 'I Gotta Feeling' is looking like it could
climb up the top 10 and we'll also be keeping an eye on the new songs from
Chicane and Mr Hudson which could also make high new entries.
Join Rich and Kat for all the action this Sunday from 4pm, on the
chart you can change, The Big Top 40.

cracked open the bubbly - after I helped find a missing CD and memory stick
containing vital new songs by the band.

The forgetful foursome, who will score their first No1 on
Sunday, had mislaid the items while on a train heading out of London last week.
Luckily for ASTON MERRYGOLD, MARVIN HUMES, JONATHAN "JB" GILL,
and ORITSÉ WILLIAMS my readers are decent folk. Someone spotted the stuff
on the train and gave me a buzz, realising they had stumbled across more than
just an amateur demo.
I heard a snippet, worked out exactly who it was and gave the
band a call. It was worth it for their reaction alone. Yesterday, I
headed over to their west London studio to hand back the tracks. I felt like the
Good Samaritan of pop and got the best welcome ever.
Surprise
Main man Oritse said: "We can't thank you enough. If this
stuff had got into the wrong hands it would have completely ruined our album
release. "We've been working for months on these tracks and don't want
them leaking out early. We want to hold back the surprise." Aston added: "We've
got your back for life now."
And another good thing has come out of the fiasco - I've had
a sneak listen to the songs and they are all top drawer. There were eight
complete tracks on the CD - Tight Rope, Crazy, 4 U, Greatest Comeback, JLS-4-1,
My Love, JLS Lady and Other Side Of The World. Some of the mixes might change
but there's no doubt the album is a contender for No1.
On Sunday the lads, who came second to ALEXANDRA BURKE
in last year's X Factor, are on course to hit No1 with debut single Beat Again.
Now they can celebrate in style without worrying about the missing material.
BOY
bands have been in the wilderness for nearly a decade.
But JLS are bringing that drought to a spectacular
end. The X Factor runners-up are set to score a chart first this weekend when
their debut single and its B-side hit the Top Ten together. Beat Again is
roaring straight to No1 and is likely to have the biggest first-week sales this
year, with 44,000 shifted already. And its flip side is doing astonishingly well
too. Umbrella has shifted almost 9,000 copies so far and is likely to chart at
around No8. It’s an extraordinary debut for ORITSE, JB, MARVIN
and ASTON. These lads are going to be huge.
Meanwhile, fellow Brrrap Pack members YOUNG SOUL REBELS
are in a label tug of war. The group, who include N-DUBZ, CHIPMUNK,
VV BROWN and DJ IRONIK, came together this month to record a
fund-raising single for charity War Child. Their re-working of KILLERS
track All These Things That I’ve done, re-titled I Got Soul, is being fought
over. My source tells me: “EMI, Warners, Universal and Sony all want to be
associated with the record, which is bound to be a big hit, even though they
won’t make a penny from it.”
Fury at JLS chart muddle
JLS
fans were in uproar last night after the band's chance of making chart history
was snatched from their grasp.
On Tuesday the midweek sales figures showed they were about
to find themselves in a position where debut single Beat Again and its B-side
Umbrella would both be in the Top Ten on Sunday. That has never happened before.
But by the time the Official Charts Company's made an update
on Wednesday, Umbrella, which was at No8, had mysteriously disappeared from the
rundown. And the army of JLS supporters wasted no time in taking to
t'internet to vent their fury on a number of the boy band's message boards.
Officials at the OCC said the track should never have been counted as a
standalone release as it is sold as part of a single bundle.
A technical error was blamed for the blunder. But I'm sure
the X Factor finalists won't be too disheartened. Beat Again will rocket
straight to No1 anyway.

Their fans have had to wait a
long time but finally the JLS debut single is here - and the boys could not be
happier with it.
Since finishing second to Alexandra Burke in last year's final Ashton,
Marvin, Oritse and South Croydon's very own Jonathan "JB" Gill have been working
non-stop, completing three tours, writing and recording their album and even
starting a book and filming a documentary.

JLS Reveal a Cappella Version of Beat Again
01/07/09
In just two weeks, the moment that
JLS have long
been waiting for will have arrived. “Beat Again,” the boy band’s debut single
will finally be released to an adoring public – and hopefully achieve just as
warm a reception on the singles chart. In order to promote the track (though
it’s getting its fair share of radio and television airplay already), JB,
Marvin, Oritse and Aston filmed an a cappella version of the song for internet
viewers.
The spot-on performance of “Beat
Again” is reminiscent of the boys’ X Factor audition during which they
impressed all the judges and went on to become the show’s semifinalist.
It’s obvious from the performance that the guys both love performing the song
and are excited about finally having their own material to sing, rather than
just performing cover songs such as the ones they sang during the X Factor
season.
JLS have been in the news quite a bit lately, and they’ve mentioned that
they’re not going to take the success of “Beat Again” for granted. This is a
big step for the boys of JLS – they know they’ve surprised some of their fans
with their original sound, but they hope that everyone will fall in love with
the song just as they have.
Aston has said that he’s keeping his fingers crossed for a No. 1 on the
charts – and it’s likely that the rest of the guys share this aspiration. We
don’t think they’ll have to wait too long, though, before “Beat Again” tops
off the charts – the song is already catching on via radio, television, and
internet – and it’s only a matter of time before it has millions singing
along.
JLS Ready for “Beat Again” Release
06/07/09
JLS aren’t shy about their upcoming album release – in an interview with In
The News, the bandmates said that they plan on coming away from X Factor with
a bang.
And it’s true that JLS have something behind them that the rest of the
competitors on last season’s X Factor don’t: “a terrifyingly passionate army
of fans”. Though the boys haven’t yet released their debut single, “Beat
Again,” they’re well known enough to have performed in front of a
55,000-strong crowd at Emirates Stadium and may well record with Ne-Yo soon.
The JLS lyrics are already being read by fans across the world.
Just before their debut single drops, the talented quartet spoke to In The
News’ Lewis Bazley about the usual: escaping the shadow of X Factor, finding
new ways to utilize their trademark color palate, and all of those eager fans.
When asked whether they felt they had to release a single quickly, Marvin
said: “I wouldn’t say that; you’ve seen in the past when people release stuff
straight away, it’s sometimes not as good. I think you’ve got to get it right.
For us, it was more important to come out with the right material, rather than
rushing us. That was the understanding with the label. Luckily, we’ve found a
single we’re happy with in Beat Again, but the wait could have been longer.”
When the interview took a turn toward the guys’ infamous color scheme, it
was noted that they didn’t seem to actually use it during the video for “Beat
Again.”
“Again, the thing with JLS is, it’s not just the clothes that are supposed to
be colored,” Aston said. “If you look behind us, we’ve got our colored theme –
when Marvin comes on and does a solo, he’s got the green light behind him,
with Oritse it’s the red, I’ve got the blue and JB’s got the yellow. It can
all be subliminal! It’s still there, but it doesn’t have to be in your face
like the t-shirts.”
Aston had a hero in Michael Jackson
02/07/09
JLS’s Aston Merrygold was among the millions shocked and saddened at the news
of Michael Jackson’s sudden death last week. Peterborough Today took the time
to record Aston’s thoughts on this historical passing.
Michael Jackson suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on Thursday, June 25, and the
news caused immediate tributes from the legend’s musical peers, family and
friends – one of whom was 21-year-old Aston of Peterborough.
The singer had planned to perform a series of concerts at London’s O2
beginning this month, and it has long been rumored that JLS were being
considered as a support act for the effort. But that’s not the only connection
Aston had with Jackson – the back-flipping boy band member’s mother described
“disbelief” as being an initial reaction to the news.
Aston’s mother told Peterborough Today: “I’ve only heard about it myself
this morning, so I haven’t had the chance to speak to Aston yet, but I’m
planning on ringing him soon. Initially, there’s this shock and disbelief at
what’s happened to him. Aston grew up with his music and it’s just a complete
and utter shock.”
Since he was a child, Aston had been a fan of the singer, who could easily
have been named the most famous man in the world during the eighties. Aston
had loved “Bad” and “Beat It,” and he even dressed as Jackson to appear on the
television show Kids Stars In Their Eyes in 2002. He once told the Evening
Telegraph that Jackson was his “hero,” when the O2 rumors were addressed.
JLS famously performed “The Way You Make Me Feel” during their run on X
Factor, and have subsequently performed the hit during live performances. On
the day the news was revealed to the world, the members of JLS took to their
Twitter to write: “We are shocked and stunned… may your soul rest in
peace…JLS.

Boot camp Aston a step from X-Factor stardom
A POP star wannabe is hoping his dream is about to come true after battling his way to a key stage of the ITV talent contest The X Factor.
Twenty-year-old Aston Merrygold, from Peterborough, is a member of four-piece boy band JLS that made it through the first round the auditions for the show last month.
And this weekend, he will be watched by a television audience of millions, as he takes to the stage with his bandmates at the O2 Arena in London for the second stage of the competition, known as boot camp.
But before then, he is booked to appear at the city's Jack Hunt School in Netherton, on Friday, where he was a pupil, and where his brother, Conor (15), and sister, Courtney (14), will be among the audience.
Aston, who has three other brothers, said: "We will do a couple of songs and give a talk and answer questions.
"It will be nice to perform in front of some of my family. They love what I do and have been very supportive.
"They keep on saying, 'You can do it! This is going to be your year.'
"But the talent this year is so strong, it's unbelievable. The people on the show are amazing, but we are the only boy band in boot camp, so that has to be good for us."
Aston popped up frequently on television as a teenager, starring in CiTV's Fun Song Factory as Cookie the chef.
He has also appeared on stage as a support to big names including smoky-voiced soul man Lemar and Shola Ama.
And he took the stage as a young Michael Jackson in the junior version of Stars in Their Eyes.
But hoping to be part of a top-of-the-bill act, he formed the band with Marvin Humes, Oritse Williams and JB Gill about a year ago, supporting himself with sales jobs while dreaming of the big time.
They called themselves JLS – it stands for Jack the Lad Swing – as a nod to the new jack swing sound of the '90s.
After emerging as runners-up in the PTUK talent contest at the O2 Arena, the boys are hoping to go one better when they revisit the venue for their performance at the climax of boot camp.
They have already won praise from The X Factor judges, with high-waisted Svengali Simon Cowell tipping them as potential winners of the competition when they appeared for their audition at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
Aston said: "We were lucky to get very good comments from Simon and everyone else.
"For him to say we are potential winners was great, but we have to step it up now.
"If we get to the final and win, that would be a dream come true because it gets your career off to a flying start and means you can go on to record albums and win awards."
Jack the lads swing X-Factor vote
A Fulham man and his bandmates are out to prove they have the X-Factor tonight after beating thousands of rivals to get to boot camp.
Oristé Williams, 21, an event management student from Carnwath Road, Fulham, founded his boyband Jack The Lad Swing (JLS) last year.
"I was singing on the live circuit and doing solo gigs before I found my bandmates through some mutual friends," he said. "We won best unsigned act at the Urban Music Awards last November and suddenly everyone wanted a piece of us."
Oristé, together with Marvin Humes, Aston Marrygold and JB Gill decided to try and get onto X-Factor after a fateful train journey.
"I was travelling with Aston to meet the other boys and we started talking about X-Factor," said Oristé. "When we got there, the lads said they had been thinking about something. They said: 'X-Factor'and we said 'absolutely'."
JLS took part in nationwide auditions involving 185,000 acts and were one of just 150 to make it through to X-Factor's Boot Camp.
"I think we've done pretty well but only time will tell," said Oristé.
As well as juggling a music career with study, Oristé looks after his mother who has multiple sclerosis.
"I want to go all the way and it means everything to me, but it would also change my mother's life forever," he said.
But, for now, Oristé and his band are soaking up the adoration of his former classmates at Larmenier and Sacred Heart Primary School, in Hammersmith Road, Hammersmith, where he gave the assembly onTuesday morning.
He will perform there today. "It used to be me sitting there listening to strangers when they came in to give assemblies and suddenly it was me doing the talking and the kids were going crazy. It was a real honour," he added. "My school contributed a huge amount to the person I am today."
The band has now moved onto the first rung of fame, being stopped in the supermarket.
"An old lady came up to me in Sainsbury's the other day and told me I had better win as she had spent her moneyvoting for me," said Oristé.

To images of the multi-millionaire, glamorous and self-important judges swishing around the country in their individual helicopters and luxury cars – presumably because no one has yet invented a vehicle big enough to accommodate four egos this size – the voice-over pompously made a declaration of intent. “This is the dawn of a new era – with the arrival of a new judge.”
Yet, we can’t help secretly believing that the fifth season of The X Factor will feature the usual delusions of superstardom, hysterics, a tirade of foul-mouthed abuse and probably some painful objects being viciously hurled about.
But enough about ex-judge Sharon Osbourne’s behaviour as she watches the show on TV every Saturday night…
In spirit Shazza lives on at the auditions, even if it took her replacement, Girls Aloud popette Cheryl Cole, most of Saturday’s first show to have what can only be described as “a Sharon moment”.
She refused to judge Nikk Mager – a fellow contestant in Popstars: The Rivals six years ago, that saw Cheryl go on to stardom, and Nikk to the oblivion of working men’s clubs in the North.
Proving yet again that there’s no such thing as a victimless crime on The X Factor, Chezza was quite happy not to speak up for Nikk when the other three judges decided to deny him that “last chance” he so craved.
And she heartlessly proved that loyalty, friendship and support shouldn’t get in the way of good telly or her own ambitions.
Putting on a butter-wouldn’t-melt image, you can’t help but wonder when the gobby Geordie will show her true self and say anything other than the bleeding obvious.
‘You can make somebody,” Chezza commented sadly after hugging Nikk goodbye and shedding the perfunctory tears, “or totally break somebody.”
No prizes for guessing which category a humiliated Nick fell into.
Not that Chezza will have many contestants quaking in their boots with her incisive observations on their musical talent. She told boy band hopefuls JLS, “I think you’re cute”. Later, 16-year-old Alexandra Davies was “so cute”.
Wow, with that sort of critical vocabulary, we can but watch Chezza in awe…

JLS have been tipped to win 'The X Factor'.
Jonathan Ansell, who appeared on the TV talent show with his former band G4 in
2004, thinks the boyband have what it takes to be crowned the winners of the
programme.
He said: "I think there are some fantastic people there and I think there are
some not so good people there as well. I think the public are voting the right
people off each week. It's sad that Girlband have gone but I just don't think
they had the qualities that some of the other contestants have. I'm sure there
are some amazing people who will do incredibly well.
"I think JLS have got something really incredible about them. They are more
polished and much more clever with their arrangements than any of the other
group than we have ever had on 'The X Factor'."
Jonathan - who can soon be seen in touring show 'A Night at the Opera' - also
spoke about how he thinks Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole is doing after
replacing Sharon Osbourne on the judging panel.
He added to BANG Showbiz: "I think Cheryl is doing incredibly. I think people
were worried there wouldn't be as much of a dynamic because Sharon had left.
While Sharon was fantastic in her year and the year after, I think Cheryl has
completely and adequately replaced her on the panel.
"I think she is coming across fantastically well, and I love how she stands up
for herself. She has incredibly constructive criticism and comments, and I
think that's maybe what the panel has been lacking in the past."
Croydon X-Factor hopeful begs for the town's backing
Saturday, October 18, 2008, 07:00
Croydon X Factor fans are being urged to back home grown talent as competition on the show intensifies tonight.
South Croydon hopeful, Jonathan Benjamin Gill, 21, known as JB, and his band JLS will be singing their hearts out on national television once again for today's public vote.
And back in South Croydon, support is being drummed up for the boys cause by JB's family – mum, Cynthia, 49, dad Keith, 50 and brother Neequaye, 20.
Posters have appeared in shops along Selsdon Road and fans can buy JLS T-shirts from JB's parents.
Keith, who runs a farm in Antigua has come back to support his son, said: "JB has liked music since he was one.
"We bought him a music kit which had a little drum and xylophone, for his birthday and he just started playing it.
"Everyone was elated when he got through the X Factor auditions but we though they would do it.
"They never went on X Factor just to take part in it, they were doing it to win."
This week's theme on the ITV reality talent contest is Michael Jackson songs.
The boys will perform their chosen song for the nation, a live audience and judges, Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh, who is also their mentor.
JB a former pupil of Whitgift School in South Croydon, is studying theology at King's College, London, when not pursuing his music career.
The other members of JLS are Marvin Humes, 23, from South East London, Ortise Williams, 21, from Fulham, and Aston Merrygold, 20, from Peterborough.
The band were among the public's favourite acts on the show last Saturday, and girl group Bad Lashes who polled the least, were the first act to leave the show.
The winner of X Factor gets a recording deal.
If you would like a JLS T-shirt, call Keith on 020 8686 8766.
Walsh, Cowell disagree over JLS
Friday, September 26 2008, 16:04 BST
By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter
Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell disagree over boyband JLS on this week's X Factor boot camp show.
The group perform Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' on Saturday night's episode, with Walsh previously comparing them to "one of the early Motown groups".
However, Cowell has a different view of the four-piece, saying: "I didn't hear one great vocal throughout the performance, you sound good as a group but it wasn't up to scratch on a worldwide level."
The first boot camp show airs this Saturday on ITV1 at 7.45pm. The second part follows on Sunday at 7pm.
